Standardized flatbed trucking trailer types and size
The trucking industry has been growing in all directions beginning with the design and production of new and improved trucks and accessories. As the other industries grow in to designing and building mega size construction structures, the trucking industy also had to change course along with the construction and manufacturing technology. The design and use of varies type of flatbed trailers and the design of robust and powerful trailer truck and engines is not an accident. The design dimension and layout of this systems is governed by the industry they are intend to be used. Among the type of industries that the trucks and trailers are used in goes the compatibility of these systmes with existing infrastruture, climate, and public safety to name a few.
The size and the configuration of flatbed trailers is dedicated by the type and dimensions of loads they are carring. One constrain every trucker and load have to abide by is the standard that U S department of transportation is regulating. Currenlty, in most states, there is a 13 feet 6 inches height limit all all loads. Also, the maximum width for a load is 8 feet and 6 inches with a maximum length of 80 feet. The maxiumum gross weight of a loaded vehicle should not exceed 80,000 lbs. Though the guidelines above limit the cap on only one end, each and every trailer type has it own lenght and weight limitations.
The bottom line is there are quick a few types trailers configurations available to satisfy this regulation and still load and transport the widest and heighest freight. There are two major categories for trailers: a fixed length end an adjustible length group. Each group has configuratins for different height requiremns. The addition of the adjustable or stretch trailer group makes available a variety of length - height combination. Four of these types of trailers are listed below with a description of their intened use.
Special type of loads that exceed the dimensional and weight limits must be handled with special permits and may have restriction such as transpot routes and time zone and etc ...

STANDARD FLAT BED TRAILER
The standard trailer is the picked when an intended load height is under 8 feet and 6 inches tall because the standard trailor design height range from 60 - 62 inches. The length for these trailers can be 45, 48, and 53 feet. Standard trailers are rated to handle approximatley up to 48,000 lbs of freight weight.
SINGLE DOUBLE DROP STEP DECKS These class of trailers are designed to handle loads with more height that the standard trailers can handle. Single drop deck trailers have beds height as low as 30 inches. The double drop deck design has even a lower bed height, namely 22 inches, for maximum height accomodation. In other words, single drop deck can handle loads up to 10 feet and 4 inches where the double drop takes shipment heights up to 11 feet and 6". Their total length varise from 48 to 53 feet. There is usable lenght reduction in this class trailers as some lenght is reserved for the step section to accomodate connection to the flatbed truck and semi-tractors.
These type of trainers as their name indicates are designed to accomodate varies length shipments ranging from 29 feet to 80 feet. However, there are different weight requiremts for the type and lenght of trailer used. They pararrel the three configurations dicussed previously, the standard, the single drop, and the double drop deck designs, only the stretch trailers have adjustible bed length that can accomodate varies arrangment of height and lenght. Generally, stretch trailers have lower weight specifications.
